Since 2014 the Swiss based not-for-profit organisation WASSER FÜR WASSER (WfW) supports Lusaka Vocational Training Center (LVTC) in providing water related skills training. Already more than 200 students, mainly from low-income households, have taken part in the plumbing and water operations program. Graduates contribute to the strengthening of the water providers, and the water sector in general, across the country.
These pictures were taken over a period of four years at LVTC.
INDUSTRY WORKSHOPS
To close the gap between technology used in the industry and in the school, WfW has enabled LVTC to launch a weekly Industry Workshop held by the local water provider and a pipe production company. The main focus is on the advantages and disadvantages of different plastic water pipes and their proper application in the field.
TEACHERS TRAINING
Rose is an alumni of LVTC (see previous picture, showing her during an Industry Workshop) and was selected to attend the teachers training course at the Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka. As part of her TTC she teaches the next generation of plumbers at LVTC, while at the same time improving her didactic and methodical skills. In doing so, this helps to improve the student-teacher ratio.
Asked why she likes water related skills education, she responded:
“Water is the basis of any development in human society. That’s why I wanted to understand the water cycle and how we best distribute the water to our population.”
SUCCESS STORY
Luke Mwansa was one of the first students who became a certified plumber with the support of WfW. The knowledge he acquired qualifies him to work for a local water trust and enables him to connect ten households to the water supply system every day.
Lukes story was even featured in the Swiss journal “Das Magazin”.
