More than 50% of the low-income urban dwellers in Zambia’s capital Lusaka lack access to clean drinking water. Therefore, the Swiss based not-for-profit organisation WASSER FÜR WASSER (WfW) supports the local water provider in improving their services in terms of network coverage, as well as management and awareness raising mechanisms.
These pictures were taken over a period of five years in different WfW project areas in Lusaka.
ROCK BLASTING
Due to the rocky terrain in several neighbourhoods in Lusaka, rock blasting is often the only way for the local water provider to start the excavation.
INSTALLATION OF WATER PIPES
More than 10km of new water pipes in four different neighborhoods have been laid with the funding of WfW.
WATER KIOSK
A step by step approach is needed to reduce the time and distance required for water procurment. As a frist step, the local water provider builds so-called water kiosks, public drinking water stations which are connected to the municipal water supply, As a second step, household connections can be laid.
SAFE AND AFFORDABLE DRINKING WATER FOR ALL
With the support of the local water provider, WfW has been able to improve access to clean drinking water for over 60,000 people in just over five years. Nevertheless, much more needs to be done to secure access to clean drinking water and to overcome economic water scarctiy - not only in Lusaka, but all over the planet.
